Tracking tips

Mark as you go

Drop a pin where the animal stood at the shot, then one at every spot of blood you find. The pins are your trail; the last one is where the arrow points when the trail goes quiet.

Read the glow

The glow marks colors that look like blood. Red leaves and red clay can glow too, and dried blood glows less. Use it to know where to look, then look closely.

Lower the sensitivity if too much glows. At dusk, turn on the flashlight.

When the trail goes quiet

Tap Back to last blood on the map and walk to the arrow. From the last pin, search slowly in widening loops, and pin anything you find.

Pause tonight, resume at first light

Pause keeps the trail and the pins. In the morning, open the track and tap Resume: recording starts where you stand, and the arrow still points to the last blood.

Maps before you go

Download the area in Settings › Offline maps while you have signal. Your trail and pins record without a map; the map shows only where you've downloaded it or viewed it online.

Recording

Keep recording with the screen off

Android

Some phones stop apps to save battery, even while TrailGlow is recording. If your trail has gaps, let TrailGlow run in the background.

Samsung

  1. Open Settings › Apps › TrailGlow.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Choose Unrestricted.

Also check Settings › Battery › Background usage limits, and remove TrailGlow from Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps.

Other phones

  1. Open TrailGlow's settings.
  2. Tap Battery or App battery usage.
  3. Choose Unrestricted or Don't optimize.

iPhone

TrailGlow keeps recording with the phone locked. Don't swipe it away in the app switcher while a track is running: iOS stops recording for apps you close that way.

Questions

Does TrailGlow need a signal?

No for tracking: recording, the glow, pins, the arrow back to the last blood and maps you downloaded all work with no signal. You need a connection to start your free trial, back up, and download maps.

Is everything that glows blood?

No. The glow marks colors that look like blood, so red leaves and red clay can glow too. It shows you where to look; you decide what it is.

Why does my trail have gaps?

Usually a battery saver stopped TrailGlow while the screen was off. See Keep recording with the screen off.

Where do the maps work?

Detailed maps cover the United States. Elsewhere, recording, pins and the arrow back to the last blood still work, on a plain map.

Does the map show property lines?

No. TrailGlow doesn't show who owns the land. Make sure you have permission before you follow a trail onto someone else's land.

Can I use it at night?

Yes. Turn on the flashlight in the camera view: the camera needs light to see color.

Can I export my tracks?

Yes, as GPX: from a track's page, or every track at once in Settings › Export all tracks. GPX opens in other mapping apps.

How does the free trial work?

New subscribers get 7 days free, on the yearly or the monthly plan. To avoid the charge, cancel before the trial ends: on iPhone at least 24 hours before, in your App Store subscriptions; on Android, in your Google Play subscriptions.

How do I cancel my subscription?

In TrailGlow, go to Settings, tap Manage, then Manage in App Store or Manage in Google Play, and cancel there. You can also cancel in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions. To avoid the charge after a free trial, cancel at least 24 hours before it ends on iPhone, or before it ends on Android.

How do I get a refund?

Apple and Google handle refunds. On iPhone, ask at reportaproblem.apple.com. On Android, request one in Google Play.

New phone?

Sign in the way you did before, with Apple or Google, and your backed-up tracks come back. Then tap Restore purchases on the subscription screen.

How do I delete my account?

In the app, go to Settings → Delete account and confirm with Apple or Google: your account and your backup are deleted right away. Tracks on your phone stay on your phone. Without the app, email support@trailglow.app from the address on your account. Deleting your account doesn't cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription. What’s deleted, and what stays

Which phones does TrailGlow work on?

iPhone with iOS [IOS_MIN] or later, and Android 9 or later.
